MR. BHANDARKAR RESIDENCE Udipi (K.S.)
Tradition is determined to a large extent by the variables of time, culture and regional characteristics. Traditional architecture too needs reinterpretation from time to time, for continuation of its virtues which may be of current relevance, whereas many architectural creations of the present day are prone to external influences irrelevant to its regional context, this residence attempts to utilize the traditional courtyard concept in a way which is appropriate to the contemporary context.
The courtyard as a hub with various private ,semi private and public areas planned around it ,is the most significant aspect of traditional houses of south Kanara. In the warm-humid conditions of the region, the court not only serves to modify the micro-climate by facilitating evaporative cooling, but infuses a sense of togetherness among its occupants.
The central court has a double height with a sloping roof and skylight and affords a variety of the adjoining spaces which are carefully modulated .The court also serves to enhance the breeze flow through a stack effect by drawing the breeze from the surrounding spaces and letting it out at the top. The top lit conical form with its volume accommodates a bridge and a semicircular arch which defines perceptually the living and dining areas on either side of the court while retaining transparency between them. The court thus represents in the symbolic terms the strength, complexity ,variety and intensity of family relationships coupled with their aspirations.
Externally the form of residence conglomerates simple geometric forms markes by a sensitive use of materials.
